Covington - Marvin H. Cook, 66-year-old prominent Fountain County banker, died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday at Carle Clinic in Urbana, Ill., where he had been a patient six days. He suffered a heart attack Friday after undergoing surgery. Born June 21, 1896, near Veedersburg, he was a son of Walter and Minnie Hesler Cook. He was married May 4, 1918 to Gretchen VanDeventer, who died last Feb. 15. Mr. Cook graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1914 and attended Indiana State College. He taught school in Davis and Mill Creek Townships in Fountain County. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Banking. He also attended the Harvard School for Senior Bank Officers. Mr. Cook started his banking career with the Kingman State Bank in 1916 and later was employed by the Farmers State Bank of Veedersburg. He became associated with the Fountain Trust Co. here in 1933 and served as secretary of the bank several years. He had made his home in this community since 1937. He was a member and chairman of the board of the First Methodist Church of Covington. He also was a member of American Legion Post 291 of Covington, F&AM Lodge 491 of Veedersburg and Lions Club of Covington, Fountain and Warren Realty Board, Chamber of Commerce of Covington and Lay Advisory Board of St. Elizabeth Hospital at Danville, Ill. He was a former member of the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions Commission. Surviving are a brother, Perry Cook of Rt. 1, Veedersburg; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Alcorn of Bloomington, Mrs. Pearl Terry of Huntington and Mrs. Marie Dice of Indianapolis; two nephews and a niece. Funeral services are announced for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Church here. Rev. Donald Wade will officiate. Interment will be in Rockfield Cemetery east of Veedersburg. The body was taken to the family residence here, 421 Johnson St., where friends may call. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour prior to services. Marvin Hesler Cook, age 66 years, 421 Johnson St., secretary and director of The Fountain Trust Company of Covington and Kingman, died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, July 1, at the Carle Hospital in Champaign, Ill., where he had been a patient since Monday, June 25. He had undergone surgery the following morning, June 26, and later suffered two coronary attacks. Mr. Cook was born in Millcreek Township, Fountain County, June 21, 1896, the son of Walter and Minnie Hesler Cook. He was married May 4, 1918 to the former Gretchen VanDeventer of Veedersburg, who preceded him in death Feb. 15, 1962. He was graduated from the Veedersburg High School in 1914 and attended Indiana State Normal, now Indiana State College, at Terre Haute, preparatory to teaching. He taught school for two terms in Davis and Millcreek townships in this county. Mr. Cook began his banking career in 1916 in the Kingman State Bank and later was with the Farmers State Bank in Veedersburg. He was employed by The Fountain Trust Company as a bookkeeper in 1932 and in 1937, he and Mrs. Cook moved to Covington. He was a director of The Fountain Trust Company and was serving as its secretary at the time of his death. He became secretary of the bank in 1938. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Banking and the Seminar for Senior Bank Officers at Harvard University. He had served as deputy Fountain County treasurer. During World War II, he was the Fountain County War Bond chairman. Mr. Cook was very active in all civic affairs and was particularly interested in the youth of the community and the entire county. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Covington and was chairman of the Methodist Church Board. He also was a member of the Fulton Banta Post 291, American Legion of Covington, Veedersburg Lodge 491, F&AM., the Valetta Chapter No. 207, Order of Eastern Star, Veedersburg; Tidal Lodge No. 36, Knights of Pythias of Covington, the Covington Lions Club, Covington Chamber of Commerce, and the Fountain-Warren Board of Realtors of which he was secretary. He was a past president of Region No. 4 of the Indiana Bankers Association and had served a four-year term on the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. He was a member of various committees of the Indiana Bankers Association and had served one year as chairman of the Agricultural Committee. He also was a member of the Lay Advisory Board of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill. He is survived by one brother, Perry Cook of Veedersburg Rt. 1, a member of the Fountain County Council; three sisters, Mrs. C. A. (Elizabeth) Alcorn of Bloomington, Mrs. O. W. (Pearl) Perry of Huntington, and Mrs. H. H. (Marie) Dice of Indianapolis; two nephews and one niece. The body was taken to his residence Monday where friends called Monday afternoon and night. He was taken to the Covington Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, where he lay in state for one hour prior to services at 4 p.m. The Rev. Donald Wade, pastor, officiated and burial, with the Bodine & Shelby and Hegg Funeral Homes in charge, was in Rockfield Cemetery, southeast of Veedersburg. - - The family of Marvin H.
